Old man time

Old man time

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then...

When I asked about my father a lot of emotions and thoughts run through my head. If you look at my original birth certificate (which no longer exists) you would see that no father was listed and I was born with a different last name. The explanation given to me when I inquired was that for my Papaw's insurance to for the birth, no father could be listed. This may have been true. Although logic dictates the truth is more in there was no father to sign the certificate at time of birth.

It is kind of funny because my parents were together when I was born. What I did not find out until decades later was the story behind all of that. So my man, the one who raised me, gave me his surname started dating my mother while she was pregnant. They were introduced by his sister and her brother (who were also dating at the time). This Marine Corp Grunt told my mother that he would love her, and anyone else that came along with that.

In fact they did not get married until I was two . When we moved to Illinois and he tried to enroll me in school is when things got difficult for my dad. They would not let him do anything or get information. This is when he decided to adopt me to avoid the hassle. So yes if you see my birth certificate now it listed him as my father, and my current last name. Although if you were to look up my Social security number you would see both my names I have an unintentional alias lol.

My parents did not tell me any of this however growing up. In fact the only reason I found that I have a father different from my dad, was when I moved back to NEO. My mother so eloquently put it, I do not want you to accidentally date your sister. Thanks ma lol. Of course it was later that I met my actual father and other sister (who is my age half the year lol). It is was weird calling someone else dad (which I usually go with pops), but my dad is real supportive about me having a relationship with my father.

If you ask my father, he will tell you I better off for not growing up with him. If you ask my dad, he will tell I his . There is no such thing as step, or half, or anything else in his mind. I his first born, and his , and the funnies thing I estranged from the majority of family for personal reasons. However my dad, I talk to regularly. In fact I have a great relationship with him. My mother divorced him around five ago or so (35 days to the day they married) but he still comes to check on my boys and me. He calls me at least once every two weeks. My mother I hear from on my birthday, Christmas, and that is it.

Anyway here is to the dads who step up.

...Lookin' back all I can say about all the things he did for me
Is I hope at least half the dad that he didn't have to be
I hope at least half the dad that he didn't have to be
'Cause he didn't have to be ...

Thanks Tmptrzz, he really is a great guy. It took me to being an adult to realize it, but I appreciate him so much now.
